Teak Care?
Teak is the most weather resistant wood
in the world. Historically, shipbuilders have used teak due to its high oil
content which resists rotting and insects. No other wood is comparable.
Now, you have the luxury of choosing how
you would like your teak to age. You have two options:
WEATHER...
If you prefer a weathered, silver-gray
look, then do nothing. Over time, weather will cause some surface erosion
leading to slight surface roughness, possible mildew and checking.
Checking is a natural process that occurs when teak develops small cracks
in the end grain of the furniture. A check is small and caused by teak
continuing to age, weather and dry. Checking does not affect the integrity
of Rock Wood furniture and will virtually disappear over time. The appeal
of a weathered look is just that…a weathered look!
PRESERVE...
If you prefer to retain the natural,
golden color of new teak, then seal your teak furniture
with Semco Teak Care Products according to instructions below.
Semco's recommended
program helps to resist the normal effects of weathering, mildew growth
and soiling. Checking will still occur but to a lesser extent.
Previously sealed teak should be resealed to compensate for traffic and
environmental wear and tear. You will be the best judge as to when your
furniture needs to be resealed. Typically once a year is sufficient for
residential use and a minimum of twice a year for commercial use.
Your furniture is weathered and you have
changed your mind?
RESTORE...
By using Semco brand products, you may
restore your weathered furniture back to the golden color of new teak by
following the instructions below.

To answer your
Technical Questions……….
A pint of teak sealer
covers 25 square feet for the first coat and 50 square feet for the second
coat. One-pint can is enough to cover two coats for a 4-foot bench. Based on
this coverage, you can anticipate that 8 to 10 pieces of furniture can be
properly sealed per gallon. The people at Semco Teak Products know teak furniture and can advise on specific application questions and
coverage.
Step 1
Sealing
If you want to
preserve the natural, golden color of new teak, then seal your teak
furniture with Semco brand Teak Sealer and, if desired, clear coat.
Why?
The Sealer contains a
UV inhibitor and mildewcide that helps to preserve teak in its natural color
for an extended period. It resists weathering, mildew growth and soiling.
Semco offers several color tones of Sealer. However, we recommend ½ & ½
Honey tone for the most natural look. The Clear Coat provides, satin finish
to the surface and is especially recommended for tabletops to minimize food
and beverage stains.
As an analogy, the
Sealer is like "suntan lotion" which helps to prevent UV damage, and the
Clear Coat is like "car wax" which helps to repel liquid. In both cases, the
products need to be reapplied on a regular basis to ensure maximum
protection.
When?
Either before the
furniture leaves Rock Wood or upon receipt of the furniture.
How?
This is only a general
overview. Please follow the instructions exactly as stated on the Semco
instruction label(s).
1. Wash the new
teak with a solution of water and a strong detergent such as Tide or Wisk.
Rinse well with clean water.
2. This opens
the grain of the wood and eliminates the waxy feel of new teak caused by
fine/oily dust during manufacturing. This is a very important step.
Ensure the wood is completely dry before applying the Sealer.
3. Apply a
first coat of Sealer using a nylon paintbrush or a pump sprayer allowing the
wood to absorb as much as it will.
4. Apply a
second coat of Sealer once the first coat is complete (maximum 2 coats). The
first coat does not have to be dry.
5. About 10
minutes after applying the second coat, wipe off excess Sealer from the wood
with a clean rag.
6. Always apply
both coats the same day.
7. When Sealer
has dried, if required, apply one thin coat of Clear Coat with a nylon
paintbrush over the Sealer. Wait approximately 10 minutes and wipe off
excess Clear Coat with a rag.
Step 2
Day-to-Day Care
The following recommendations are based on the assumptions that your teak
furniture has already been treated with Semco brand Sealer and/or Clear
Coat. These suggestions are intended to help you preserve your teak in its
original condition.
Soiled? Stained?
Clean the teak with a
solution of mild detergent and water to remove dirt and grime…
· Use a clean rag or sponge to gently clean the wood
· Rinse well with clean water
· Never use a brass brush, pressure washer or steel wool as they will
damage/discolor the teak surface
· If there is severe staining and you are not satisfied with the results,
then you may want to move directly to
Step 3:
Annual Maintenance & Resealing
Please note that for "emergency spot cleaning of severe stains…
· Use a Scotch Brite pad (green pad-lowest abrasiveness for household use)
instead of a rag or sponge for the above procedure; or lightly sand the
affected area using a fine sandpaper (250 grit). Note that the use of any
abrasive pad or paper will affect the finish such that the affected area
will have to be resealed.
· Follow Step 3: Annual Maintenance & Resealing for just the affected area.
If you follow this procedure for just the affected area then you should be
aware that it would likely lead to lack of uniformity on the surface. For
this reason, we recommend that you leave any major cleaning requirements of
the Annual Maintenance program outlined below.

1. Clean the teak with a solution of mild detergent and water to remove
dirt and grime…
· Wet down the wood with a hose.
· Use a Scotch Brite pad (green pad-lowest abrasiveness for household use)
or soft bristle brush
· Never use a brass brush, pressure washer or steel wool as they will
damage/discolor the teak surface
2. For severe staining, lightly sand the affected area…
· Sand by hand or with a power sander
· Use a fine sandpaper (250 grit)
· If you choose to sand a table top, then we recommend that you sand the
entire table top to ensure
conformity.· Clean the teak with a solution of mild detergent and water
as per the above Step
3. Ensure the wood is completely dry before applying the Sealer.
4. Apply a single fresh coat of Sealer using a nylon paintbrush. If the
teak was previously sealed with Clear Coat, then it is no problem to apply a
new coat of Sealer directly over the top of the Clear Coat.
5. About 10 minutes after applying the coat of Sealer, wipe excess
Sealer from the wood with a clean rag.
6. When sealer has dried, if required, apply one thin coat of Clear Coat
with a nylon paintbrush over the Sealer. Wait approximately 10 minutes and
wipe off excess Clear Coat with a rag.
Step 4
Restoring
If you did not follow the annual maintenance program and your teak furniture
has begun to weather to a silver-gray color, then you can still restore the
teak to its natural color by using Semco brand Two Part Teak Cleaner. These
suggestions are intended to help you restore your teak to its natural color
and original condition.
Why?
When teak is exposed
to the sun and weather, the natural oils migrate to the surface of the wood.
The sun then oxidizes this oil and turns the surface to a silver-gray color.
Semco brand Cleaner helps to restore the natural beauty of the wood. Semco
cleaner removes the effects of mildew, weathering and food and water stains.
When?
Any time(s) during the
life of the teak product. Note that using Semco Cleaner on a regular basis
will contribute to a rougher surface over time.
How?
This is only a general
overview. Please follow the instructions exactly as stated on the Semco
instruction label(s).
1. Wet down the
teak with a hose.
2. Apply Part 1 Cleaner to a small area at a time and overlap each area
working from top to bottom so as not to let the cleaner dry on the wood.
3. Use a scotch Brite pad (green pad-lowest abrasiveness for household
use) or soft bristle brush to gently clean the wood.
4. Never use a brass brush, pressure washer or steel wool, as they will
damage/discolor the teak surface.
5. Without rinsing, apply Part 2 in the same fashion.
6. Rinse thoroughly with water.
7. Repeat the process for stubborn stains. The wood will lighten as it
dries.
To preserve the natural, golden color of the restored teak, follow the steps
outlined in this program beginning with Step 1: Sealing.
We are sure you will
enjoy your teak furniture for many years to come!
